With the longer days of summer comes more time for chores, and attic cleanouts are one of them. But the warm weather can make these tasks feel physically overwhelming, especially for anyone who has never done a deep cleaning in a hot attic before. For this reason, attic cleanouts are best done during cooler temperatures, such as the morning or evening. Nancy Meck, founder of Meck Organizing, offers a few tips to help the process go as smoothly as possible:

Cool your attic.

A toasty attic insulation causes uncomfortable heat to creep down through the house, driving up energy bills. The right roof cooling solutions and proper attic ventilation keep attic temperatures from rising, increasing the lifespan of roofing materials, reducing maintenance costs and improving your home’s comfort.

Check for leaks and upgrade your insulation.

If your attic isn’t properly insulated, heat easily passes into living spaces during the summer, driving up air conditioning costs. Installing or upgrading to higher R-value insulation prevents that from happening. The higher the R-value, the better the insulation’s thermal resistance. Closed-cell spray foam insulation is a great option for central Pennsylvania’s climate zone 5, offering an R-value of up to R-60.

A good attic can also improve your home’s curb appeal and add value. Insulation reduces moisture buildup, preventing mold and wood rot and keeping allergens out. It can also block outside noises, making your home quieter and more peaceful. If you have questions about the right attic insulation for your home, contact an energy efficiency expert.
